Lightning reaches the ground when intra-cloud lightning makes contact with positively charged molecules, fueling the strike, stretching the lightning to the ground. Of course, all this happens at 270,000 mph. But HOW does intra-lightning form? HOW do the positively charged molecules fuel the strike? Well the positive charged molecules in the top of the storm, and the negatively charged molecules in the bottom of the storm meet, which basically the same thing as the lightning reaching the ground. Personally, I’ve never seen cloud-to-ground lightning, even though it’s harder for storms to hold in their lightning so it doesn’t touch the ground. The positively charged molecules fuel the lightning as the phone flashlight button turns on the flashlight. The molecules absorb into the existing negatively charged molecules, making the lightning stronger.
